Planing white poplar

This is a shop piece & poplar's just fine. This poplar was scored from the local home improvement store (the blue one, not the orange one).

Hand-cut dovetails

Dovetails are hand-cut and widely-spaced. The dovetailed drawer dividers will add tremendous strength.

Driving dovetails home

Dry-fitting the large dovetailed panels.

Divider dados ploughed

3/4" shelf divider dados are ploughed.

Full length rabbet

to accept the 1/4" case back. Stanley No. 78.

Stopped rabbet.

This is hard with a No. 78. We'll clean the stops with a chisel.

Case glued-up

nice and square. Now we'll turn our attention to the sliding dovetail drawer dividers.

Sliding dovetail dividers

These are executed like 2" deep 1/2-blind dovetails. Any sawcut overshoot will be hidden by the divider dado and webframe divider system.

Front dividers

being installed. These will be flush with the case front.

Webframe installation

The drawer supports (within dado) are pocket-screwed into the drawer dividers (dovetailed). No dust panel was installed, as this is a shop piece.

Close-up of case back

Here you can see the rabbets for the caseback. The drawer support will be planed smooth & waxed with paraffin.

Lots of drawer construction

1/2-blind drawer dovetails being planed smooth.

Drawer construction

Constructed traditionally with open rear access. A single brass screw rides in a slot to allow for movement.

Rear view

the whole assembly from behind. The drawer bottoms are 1/4" solid hardwood. Ideally, we would have made raised panels from 1/2" thick hardwood. We have to keep reminding ourselves that this is shop furniture!

She's assembled

for the most part. Now for some simple hardware.

Drawer pulls installed

Not a bad looking case! It will be surrounded by a bakers-rack-style cage & plopped under a mitersaw.

Sitting in its cage

A plinth with levelers will get her up to working height.

Simple plinth

This riser gets the assembly high enough to blow sawdust under.

Now for the fun part

filling the chest!

A home for chisels

This has since been re-arranged to allow for more fine chisels.

Plane cave

A home for a couple of combination planes. This space will likely become too prime for this luxury!
